Alphabet Of Manly Virtues: “H” Is For “Hustle”

hYou can’t wait for it.  You can’t avoid it.  It will come for you.

It’s Hustle.

Sounds very manly right? Well before we can learn to recognize HUSTLE, we need to have a better understanding of it.

Hustle is the Dukes of Hazzard. Who else welds their doors shut so they can jump in thru the window while trying to stop Boss Hog?

To hustle is to do hard things.

It’s easy as a man, father, or husband to hustle so much that you leave everyone else in the dust. You can hustle at many things and end up leaving many more in the dust. You can be #1 and still be in last place.

A guy I worked with about 15 years ago knew hustle, but I don’t think he realized something about the consequences of his hustle. He was a young, fairly new husband to a young, fairly new wife, and they didn’t have any kids (which admittedly made it a bit easier to hustle). He came to work one day sharing how he was tired of hustling and his wife not wanting to hustle like Him. He actually told her hustle or you might get left behind (Wow, nice man to be married too, right ladies?).

The world will tell you to hustle… Hustle to the bar. Hustle your career. Hustle to tolerate how others hustle, even when it goes against what you know is right. The world will try to hustle your kids or your money away with lots of stuff.

So what we can say about hustle then? Is it a bad thing?

Well it’s not all bad, but when we hustle, we need to do it for Jesus:

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” -Colossians 3:23

Hustle isn’t just for the 9-5. It also means…

  • Disciplining your kids as the Lord would do and has called us to do.
  • Watching the movie your wife wants to that you could care less for (Insert Downtown Abbey here).
  • Making dinner and being Mr. Mom after a long days work.
  • Being humble enough to admit when you’re wrong and not blame the other guy.
  • Repenting from sin and seeking God at all times.
  • Keeping your day job while you get up 30 minutes earlier to chase your dream.

“H” is for HUSTLE!  The only question is: Will you?

How do you hustle in your career and dreams without turning work into an idol? Share your thoughts in the comments!
