uThroughout our lives we will face all kinds of storms… Illness. Divorce. Poverty. Depression. Betrayal. Failure.

There will be gales that knock us off our feet. There will be floods that overwhelm and threaten to drown us.There will be tornadoes that sweep into our lives and tear apart everything we hold dear.

We can “batten down the hatches” of our lives and stock our shelters, but at the end of the day, we can’t shield ourselves from the heartache and the thousand natural shocks this flesh is heir to. The storms batter everyone—the good, the bad, the ugly. Just because I am in the midst of a life crisis doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with bad decision-making or personal failings.

The disciples, Jesus’ closest friends, faced a really intense storm in Luke 8:22-25…

One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?”

In this instance, it’s clear that the disciples didn’t pass the test. It’s tough to criticize the disciples, though, because how many times have we found ourselves in the middle of our own storms and responded the same way?

When the storms come, we have two options: we can buckle and run, or we can stand firm—resting in the security that comes in knowing the God that is stronger than any storm we will ever face. It takes courage. It takes faith.

Being unflappable—calm in the face of crisis—is not easy or natural, but I think it is an essential trait to cultivate. I believe that the family follows the lead of the husband and father: If we learn to trust in God’s faithfulness rather than running with our tail between our legs, our family will follow suit.

God will show us the way, but we must ask for His guidance:

I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. -Psalm 16:8

Our battles are never won because of our strength or the enemy’s weakness. They are won only as we allow God to guide and then boldly follow where He leads. No matter how insignificant the decision may appear, let’s walk in His strength and always seek His counsel.

That’s how we learn to stand in the midst of the rains, and the thunder, and the wind.

That’s how we become unflappable.
